In 2023, the scholarship program was expanded to include a NextGen Legacy Project, where deserving runners-up have the potential of receiving personalized support from GUE.
These individuals are called NextGen Trainees; one of whom is Lara Indra - PhD in forensic anthropology, currently conducting research in both crime scene investigations and forensic medicines. She recently completed a GUE Fundamentals class with Ivan Wagner in Switzerland, to kickstart her goals of contributing to fatal diving accident documentation, research and prevention. Here, she recounts her experiences. Enjoy!

    I think you are mistaken about the risk of freezing being less with doubles. You are only breathing from one regulator at a time. So the air you draw from your first stage will be the same in single and doubles configurations at a given depth. Unless I am missing something

    I want to dive with the Atomic Aquatics SS1 (inflator/regulator) as my secondary for open water recreational diving. Would you recommend the long hose setup and also is a 1.5m hose adequate? I haven’t been able to see many practical videos about (inflator/regulator combos) so I’d appreciate your advice.

    I'm gonna try that technique while gearing up, that seems like a great idea. Especially when diving with heating there's a lot of stuf to be arranged on the right side. Managing the cord during diving is a lot easier for me with a 1,98m (6'6") body, i just extend my arm... Actually i got a slightly longer light cord to be able to use the reel more safely (to keep it further away from my body). Other than that I keep on being amazed how universal all the gear is between GUE divers.

    During a pool session trying to find my trim, I strapped the weightbelt to the tank (not a good idea in OW). By moving the center of mass upwards, this "problem" became even more apparent. As soon as I leaned too much forward or backward I would start pitch without control. Most PADI trim theory doesn't seem to mention the importance of a centered or low center of mass.

      With development in technologies and understanding of theory behind diving, GUE has grown into this process cautious and correct. This was very present with the development of the CCR program. I teach my students how to use manual profiling in addition to the use of deco planner and dive computers. The computer is used as a guide to validate what the student already knows and planned. This update is reflective in the newest version of the Tec 1 materials. With regards to redundancy the behind a strap the argument could be made to why not dive with 2 computers or bottom timers? Additionally having a bungee failure on a dive computer would not seem like a life threating failure as your team mate is always there as a means of redundancy and you could simply hold the broken computer in your hand. Last bit this video I'm explaining the simplistic approach to setting up a bungee on a Perdix dive computer allowing use for 2 different exposure systems. What computer or bottom timer you use is completely up to you. The 10 years I've been teaching for GUE and 14 years affiliated, shearwater computers are some of the most common I see. This video serves as a useful tool to that of setting up a bungee and not intended for explanation of what computer to use for deco models. I hope this helps clear any confusion up you may have. If you have any questions about standards and GUE programs your always welcome to reach out to me for anything. Thanks

      @@square1performance373 No man, I am one of those who paid GUE for courses about bakers dozen and no-no CCR. What kind of groupies are you?

  • @scottjohnson4319

    Instead of having two independent straps so if one breaks the other still retains the computer no you have only one. Doesn't seem very GUE to me...

    • @evzl3589
      @evzl3589 2 місяці тому

      I disagree. The whole point of using one bungee is how easily adapting it is for different types of thermal protection. With 2 independent straps you would have to adjust twice each time you change you thermal protection of choice. The concept is applied to harness strap for a backplate, single vs dual bladder BCDs you name it. So what Mr. Collwill has shown in this video is very much GUE philosophy to me.

    • @square1performance373
      @square1performance373 2 місяці тому

      You can add a knot to retain the bungee on either side on the inside. Seems pretty clever to me. 5000 plus dives and never had a bungee break on a dive and only had it break once on the surface.

    • @bluegravityscuba7008
      @bluegravityscuba7008 Місяць тому

      This video is intended for allowing a simplistic approach to the setting up the bungee on the shearwater Perdix to allow different exposure systems. GUE standards do not specify this process or how to setup the bungee on bottom timers or computers. Retention can be made by placing an additional knot in the middle on each side when the loops are fully extended. This would retain the computer in the event of a failure. Bungee failure is not very likely and with keeping this as simple as possible the additional knots I didn't see fit to add to the video. If you have any questions your welcome to reach out to me directly. Thanks

    • @bluegravityscuba7008
      @bluegravityscuba7008 Місяць тому

      The length will very pending on the persons wrist size and exposure suits they use. I find its best to leave a little length on the bungee and adjust on one end before cutting it off. Make sure you try both suits on and test the tightness before making your final adjustment and trimming it.

    I really enjoyed this course. Working underwater with all the tasks divided in the team, working with all the new equipment, working together towards the goal you set yourselves and then achieving it. The fun part might be the diving itself but without all the planning, preparation, debriefing and processing the data you will not have the efficient and safe dive. And you will not have the results you were looking for and why you made the dive the first place. Handing over the final report as a result of your work as a team is a great feeling.

      I would try with a 26 inch high pressure for single tank. A 24 inch may also weak if you are a bit smaller in torso size. However with dry suit and a bit taller diver I find the 26 inch more comfortable for single tank (and then a bit shorter for double set up).
